At some point, every actor in training experiences the work of William Shakespeare.  Some adore it, some abhor it,  and some like myself are just trying to figure what he’s talking about.  But once you get past the flowery old English style phrases you realize these stories of dysfunctional relationships and political intrigue are every bit as relevant today as they were 400 years ago.  While memorizing the famous opening monologue to Richard III I would use different dialects and backstories to trick myself into remembering the words.  Maybe he’s a New York criminal Godfather one day or perhaps a Pharmaceutical CEO from Texas.  When I tried a genteel old Southern Gentleman, perhaps a plantation owner, something clicked into place.  I shared with several instructors and after some initial eye rolls at the idea, they had to admit it was easier to understand.  So, I thought, why not try out more Shakespeare pieces? The irreverent name of the show came to me early on and inspired the narrator and matriarch of the show Auntie Bella.  That wacky and much beloved no-nonsense Auntie who never fails to speak her mind.  I hope you enjoy her homespun antics as much I do creating them.  As Bella would say “after reading all those yonders and reckons, well I do declare that Mr Shakespeare was a southern boy at heart!”

A delicious blend of Southern charm and history.  As enjoyable as a slice of warm pecan pie with sweet tea!  A truly enjoyable evening of theatre!

Sweeter than Southern iced tea, and with a tongue sharper than your Grandma’s church knitting circle,  Auntie Bella’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic monologues is fresh and entertaining. Reimagining Shakespeare through Southern archetypes is perfect, and Auntie Bella both honors the text while modernizing it. Funny, thought-provoking, and banana pudding? Billy Shakespeare (we would call him Billy in the South) would approve.

I enjoyed Robert James in “Southern fried Shakespeare.” I found the production to be entertaining and the characters well thought out and captivating in their performances. I think Robert did a good job at bridging the gap between modern day and Shakespeare and infusing his own brand of humor, quick wit and a good understanding of the authors intent on the original pieces. Well done sir!

A friend suggested I see “Southern Fried Shakespeare”. I was hesitant because I’m not a big Shakespeare person. But I was very surprised by Robert James’ one-man show. It was funny one moment and heartbreaking, the next as Robert moved seamlessly from character to character. If it comes your way, don’t miss it!

Wow!  What a show!  Robert does it all…sings, dances, and transforms Shakespeare’s immortal words into hilarious southern expressions!  Fresh, smart, and totally entertaining!

I loved Robert James’ show. His bigger than life personality won me over. The different characters were perfect even though Auntie Bella was my favorite 😏.

If Shakespeare and Scarlet O’Hara had a son, it’s Robert James! His dazzling performance as “Auntie Bella” is equal parts hilarious and soulful. You will find yourself laughing so hard that you’re crying, and also be so moved by his songs that you’re weeping. I would go see this show every single weekend if Robert James performed it. You will undoubtedly be entranced by “Southern Fried Shakespeare “ the moment it begins. It’s farcical, heartwarming and highly engaging from start to finish. Robert is an exceedingly talented and exuberant actor and singer. This show is a guaranteed perfect night out.
